Vanke Fontanelle Aesthetics Pavilion Experience Center

Platinum A' Design Award Winner 2022

Within the evolving discourse of contemporary spatial design, Wei Jinjing, Wei Yaocheng, and Zhang Huichao's Experience Center emerges as a sophisticated meditation on the threshold between constructed environment and natural landscape, exemplifying principles that bridge Eastern philosophical traditions of garden design with Western modernist architectural vocabulary. The design team demonstrates exceptional command of spatial choreography, orchestrating a sequence of experiences that unfolds through carefully calibrated relationships between solid and void, reflection and substance, enclosure and exposure. Technical accomplishment manifests through the seamless integration of expansive glazing systems that appear to dissolve the boundary between interior hospitality spaces and the contemplative water garden, while the precisely engineered reflecting pool transforms the courtyard into a doubled realm where architecture and sky converge in liquid mirror. The chromatic strategy exhibits refined restraint, limiting the palette to essential tones that allow material textures and light qualities to assume expressive prominence, with warm interior illumination creating intimate contrast against the cool atmospheric conditions of the exterior realm. Thematic resonances with classical garden traditions appear in the deliberate framing of the mature tree as living sculpture, positioned asymmetrically to provide organic counterpoint to geometric architectural volumes, while the sculptural vessel visible through the glass pavilion functions as a contemporary interpretation of the scholar's object, inviting contemplation and cultural reference. The work seems to explore questions of dwelling and transition, creating spaces that honor both the need for sheltered refuge and the human desire for connection with natural cycles of light, weather, and season. Viewers might consider how the design negotiates between permanence and impermanence, the solid architectural frame and the ever-changing reflections that animate its surfaces throughout the diurnal cycle.

The project is the experience center of the residential property Fontanelle developed by Vanke, located in Keqiao District, Shaoxing, China. Shaoxing is renowned as the Oriental Venice. The design team drew on the aesthetic of silk, integrating the poetic scenery of southern China with the stylish and ambience of Apennine peninsula, creating a modern space that leads a special lifestyle.
