Yamamotoyama Rebranded Tea Package

Platinum A' Design Award Winner 2021

Eisuke Tachikawa's Yamamotoyama Rebranded Tea Package exemplifies the delicate balance between honoring venerable craft traditions and articulating contemporary design sensibilities, presenting a comprehensive packaging system that speaks simultaneously to heritage and modernity. The collection demonstrates masterful color theory application, deploying a carefully calibrated palette that moves from warm earth tones through sophisticated jewel hues while maintaining visual cohesion through consistent value relationships and strategic deployment of neutral cream labels as unifying elements. The designer appears to draw upon traditions of refined material culture, where packaging serves not merely as container but as ceremonial object worthy of contemplation and appreciation. Technical accomplishment manifests in the subtle textural treatments applied to cylindrical surfaces, suggesting traditional papercraft techniques while achieving the precision required for contemporary commercial production. The typographic program establishes elegant hierarchy through the interplay of brush-drawn calligraphic characters and clean modern letterforms, creating a visual conversation between historical practice and present-day clarity. Compositional intelligence appears in the systematic variation of container formats, each adapted to its specific contents while maintaining family resemblance through consistent proportional relationships, metallic accent placement, and label positioning. The deep indigo presentation surface functions as more than backdrop, its saturated blue providing complementary contrast that intensifies the warm tones while suggesting the contemplative atmosphere associated with traditional tea ceremony. The work invites consideration of how design might honor the accumulated wisdom of generations while remaining fully present to contemporary visual culture, and how material objects might embody values of craftsmanship, attention, and care that transcend their commercial function.

Yamamotoyama is one of the oldest and most established tea merchants in Japan. It has been the first to sell Green tea today. With the concept of Return to the origin of Edo, Nosigner have redesigned the packages to keep the traditional tea culture alive and pass it on to the future. To make them modern while retaining the charm of the long history brand, Nosigner referred to the traditional colors and structure of the scrolls with Yamamotoyama's original small crests and the calligraphy style of Edo.
