Golden A' Design Award Winner 2021
This evocative visualization of the MG iSmart Infotainment System HMI by SAIC and Star represents a distinguished achievement in contemporary automotive interface design, meriting recognition through prestigious design accolades. The work demonstrates masterful integration of functional digital architecture with aesthetic refinement, positioning itself within the evolving tradition of human-machine interface design that seeks to harmonize technological capability with intuitive user experience. The compositional strategy employed here reveals sophisticated understanding of visual hierarchy, with the luminous display panels serving as controlled focal points within the otherwise subdued interior environment, a technique that echoes principles of contrast and emphasis fundamental to effective visual communication. The interface architecture itself exemplifies contemporary best practices in information design, utilizing card-based modular organization that allows users to access climate controls, weather information, navigation guidance, communication functions, and entertainment options through clearly delineated visual zones. Particularly noteworthy is the chromatic restraint exercised throughout the design—the predominant cool neutrals of the interior create a calm, focused environment while strategic color accents in cerulean, amber, and cyan provide necessary wayfinding and status communication without overwhelming the visual field. The inclusion of the mountainous landscape beyond the windscreen serves multiple functions: it contextualizes the interface within real-world usage scenarios, demonstrates the system's readability under varied lighting conditions, and introduces an aspirational dimension that connects technological innovation with experiences of freedom and exploration. The circular instrument cluster displays remarkable depth of digital craftsmanship, featuring a three-dimensional vehicle representation that communicates driving assistance information with clarity and visual sophistication. One might observe how the material treatments visible in the steering wheel's contrast stitching and the brushed metallic console trim speak to a holistic design philosophy where digital interfaces complement rather than compete with physical craftsmanship. The viewer is invited to consider how such interfaces mediate our relationship with increasingly complex vehicle systems, transforming potential cognitive burden into accessible, even pleasurable interaction.
SAIC's brand MG was challenged with a new market rollout and needed a custom HMI solution to support this strategic initiative. The design embraces new technology trends centered around connectivity digital touchpoints and smart assistants with an intuitive interface that strengthens consumers' emotional relationships with both the vehicle and the MG brand.
