Sunac Guangshen Longshan Commercial Town

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2022

Lu wen's Sunac Guangshen Longshan Commercial Town emerges as a compelling exemplar of contemporary biophilic retail design, wherein the boundaries between commercial environment and botanical sanctuary dissolve into a unified experiential narrative. The work participates in an established lineage of nature-integrated architecture that traces conceptual ancestry through twentieth-century organic modernism while embracing twenty-first-century wellness-centered design philosophies that prioritize human psychological comfort within commercial contexts. The pavilion structure at center, with its abstracted domestic roofline rendered through precisely spaced timber battens, suggests an architectural vocabulary that domesticates the retail experience, transforming transactional space into something approaching dwelling. Technical accomplishment manifests throughout: the biomorphic ceiling elements demonstrate sophisticated fabrication requiring compound curved surfaces and integrated lighting systems that create luminous aureoles suggestive of natural sky phenomena. The material palette—dominated by warm timber tones ranging from pale ash to deeper honey—establishes thermal comfort through chromatic warmth while the abundant botanical installations activate primal human affinities for natural environments. Particularly noteworthy is the contemplative Zen garden intervention in the foreground, which introduces meditative pause into the commercial journey, suggesting the designer's attention to temporal experience and psychological respite. The integration of living walls featuring various green species creates vertical gardens that simultaneously purify air, dampen acoustics, and provide visual refreshment. One observes careful attention to the hierarchy of illumination, where diffused ambient light from organic ceiling forms establishes overall warmth while strategic accent lighting draws attention to merchandise zones without creating harsh contrasts. The viewer might contemplate how such environments reshape contemporary expectations for commercial architecture, transforming retail from mere transaction into multisensory experience.

Order is a necessary condition for a sense of ritual. The wooden ceiling is used as the design language throughout the whole project. The shape is full of changes, and the geometric shape mobilizes the atmosphere of the space. The circular arch elements are used to break the monotonous and long space at the end, giving the space a sense of extension and enhancing the limitation of the space.
