Rose Flower Earrings

Silver A' Design Award Winner 2023

Azam Nabatian's Rose Flower Earrings exemplify the enduring dialogue between decorative arts traditions and contemporary jewelry practice, channeling the botanical enthusiasm that has animated ornamental design from ancient civilizations through the Art Nouveau period into present-day expressions of nature-inspired luxury. The designer appears to draw upon the rich heritage of enamel work, a technique demanding exceptional material knowledge and technical precision, wherein powdered glass fuses with metal substrate through controlled firing to achieve the luminous chromatic depths visible in these pendants' verdant leaves and warm-toned blossoms. The shield-shaped silhouette, softened at its vertices and traced by continuous diamond borders, suggests influences from heraldic traditions while the internal botanical arrangement evokes the garden windows and floral fantasies characteristic of fin-de-siècle decorative sensibilities. Particularly accomplished is the chromatic strategy that positions warm terracotta-rose petals against cool viridian foliage, generating visual vibration through complementary opposition while the golden metal framework and yellow pistil centers provide harmonizing warmth that unifies the palette. The openwork construction demonstrates sophisticated structural engineering, each enamel element suspended within the gold framework to allow light passage through negative spaces, creating visual lightness despite the substantial material presence. The pendant tourmalines or garnets, their faceted surfaces catching light differently than the matte enamel passages, introduce rhythmic sparkle while extending the rose-hued theme downward in graceful conclusion. One might observe how this work participates in perennial artistic meditation upon the garden as symbolic space, the enclosed paradise where nature's beauty achieves perfected form through human cultivation and craft. What relationship between natural inspiration and artisanal interpretation does this transformation from living rose to permanent jeweled form invite the viewer to contemplate?

Designer selected the flowers as part of nature and they considered the diamonds around the flowers as dew in nature surrounding the flowers. The brilliance of the dew on the flower adds to the beauty of the flower as a gem that has taken the color of the flowers and it falls. By using enamel colors and a combination of it with jewellery makes this recognizable piece. Metal casting, fire enamel and hand made stone setting is used in the creation of this work.
