Golden A' Design Award Winner 2017
Prism Design's Suigetsu Japanese Restaurant stands as an accomplished exemplar of contemporary hospitality interior design that thoughtfully synthesizes elements drawn from traditional architectural vocabularies with distinctly modern spatial sensibilities and material applications. The installation demonstrates sophisticated understanding of how light, material, and spatial proportion collaborate to establish atmosphere appropriate to the contemplative rituals of dining. The wall treatment system, composed of backlit translucent panels arranged within dark metal grids, evokes historical precedents including traditional paper screens and lattice windows while reinterpreting these references through contemporary fabrication and illumination technologies. This approach creates what might be termed a lantern effect at architectural scale, transforming the enclosing surfaces into sources of diffused luminosity rather than mere boundaries. The design team has evidently considered how the highly reflective floor surface would contribute to the overall spatial experience, effectively doubling the perceived height of the room through its mirror-like qualities and creating an almost aquatic sense of immersion appropriate to the establishment's name, which references the poetic concept of water and moon. The pendant light fixtures, with their clear glass globes and warm filament sources, introduce a secondary rhythmic layer while providing functional task illumination for dining surfaces below. Material selection throughout reveals careful attention to tactile and visual warmth, with wooden table surfaces providing organic counterpoint to the industrial qualities of exposed ceiling infrastructure and metal frameworks. The overall achievement suggests a sophisticated balance between theatrical drama and intimate comfort, creating an environment that elevates the dining experience through environmental poetry. Visitors are invited to observe how the interplay of reflection and illumination transforms throughout their experience.
